To send or retrieve a file from a remote computer first select the computer from the computer list and click 'Explore'.
Both the local and remote computer's directory structure are shown in a single Explorer style window. The local directory structure reflects the current, i.e. real-time, state of the local folders and files. The remote directory structure, however, shows the offline state from the last directory update received from the remote computer (in the example shown below the remote directory structure was limited to the WorkDocs sub folder on the D: drive).
Retrieving a file from a remote computer
RemoteCommand uses the Explorer Copy & Paste analogy to retrieve files, i.e. Copy the file from the remote computer and Paste the file to the local computer:
- Browse to the location on the remote computer for the file to be retrieved
- Select the file(s) to be retrieved
- Click Copy from the toolbar (or press Ctrl+C)
- Browse to the location on the local computer where the retrieved files are to be stored
- Click Paste from the toolbar (or press Ctrl+V)
RemoteCommand adds the new Copy/Paste command to the 'Current pending commands' list, as shown below.
The command email sits in the pending commands list until the command is sent. Once the user has finished specifying commands for the remote computer the commands can be sent by pressing the Send button on the toolbar. Assuming that both this computer and the remote computer are running the RemoteCommand Listener running, and the user has Read privileges on the remote computer, the file should be returned and stored in the specified location. To check on the status of the command see the Command History for the remote computer.
Sending a file to a remote computer
Sending a file works very much like retrieving a file but rather than copying from the remote computer and pasting to the local computer the commands are the other way around, i.e. the user copies the file from the local computer and pastes the file to a location on the remote computer:
- Browse to the location on the local computer for the file to be sent
- Select the file(s) to be sent
- Click Copy from the toolbar (or press Ctrl+C)
- Browse to the location on the remote computer where the sent files are to be stored
- Click Paste from the toolbar (or press Ctrl+V)
