System

When you start RemoteCommand for the first time the Configuration utility will automatically run. You can also run the Configuration utility directly from the Start menu.
Note: This configuration is considered system wide and overrides individual security settings for configured remote computers.

·Data location - the location that RemoteCommand uses to store all its data, including configuration data, remote computer data, pending incoming/outgoing emails etc.
·Logging level - specifies which RemoteCommand messages are logged in the logging files. Since the logging files are rarely used, apart from diagnosing system configuration problems, this option should not be changed unless instructed to do so by Mythicsoft technical support.
·Allow remote file browsing - switches on or off, at a system wide level, the ability for remote computers to request the computers directory structure for off-line browsing. It is also possible to limit remote browsing to files and folders of a sub folder. This setting also effects copying/pasting files and executing DOS commands, i.e. those operations are only allowed in the same location as the browsing limit.

Email

Although RemoteCommand can use an MAPI compliant email client we recommend the use of Internet protocols SMTP for sending and POP3 for reading if at all possible. However, in a large number of corporations users are not granted access to Internet SMTP or POP3 servers, instead corporate email servers handle all email destined for the Internet. In these situations the only available solution for RemoteCommand is to use the actual local email client to send and receive emails. If your email client software is a Microsoft product, such as Outlook, then there should be no problems due to their excellent MAPI support. Unfortunately the same can't be said for other email clients.

Click the Email Wizard button for a step-by-step guide to setting up the email section. For more experienced users the fields may be filled in directly.

Since RemoteCommand allows the remote retrieval of emails from the local email client the Local Email Client section has an additional option of 'Allow read-only remote access'. This is a system wide setting allowing or disallowing remote computers from retrieving the email of the local email client, e.g. Outlook Express.

Email Listener

An important part of RemoteCommand is the email listening process. For communication to be seamless the Listener needs to be checking for incoming RemoteCommand emails on a frequent basis regardless of whether the main RemoteCommand application is running or not. There are three options for setting how/when the Listener runs:
·Always running - the Listener is run as an NT service and is therefore running whenever the computer is switched on (NT Services are only supported in NT/2000/XP or higher), i.e. the Listener does not require any user to be logged on to run.
·Logon - the Listener is added to the startup processes for the current user, i.e. the Listener will start running whenever the user logs on to the machine and will close when the user logs off (default option).
·Manual start - the Listener must be manually started by the user. This option is not recommended since it is unlikely that RemoteCommand emails will be checked and processes on a frequent and timely basis.

If the NT Service (i.e. always running) option is selected the user is asked to specify whether or not the service should run as the Local System account or as a specific user. Since the Local System account may not have access to many important network resources it is recommended to specify an actual user account to run the service under.
